I am not even going to pretend that you don’t know what Twitter is by now. You are probably surfing your tweetfeed as you read this. Everyone seems to have an account at that site, and most of us have a full blown addiction that can never be satisfied. It is just the nature of social media; it gets its hooks into you and never lets go.
But surprisingly, many people don’t know the full extent of the features available through Twitter. This is very true when it comes to hashtags, which are much more than just a way to humorously finish off a microthought.
The hashtag system is an interesting way to both link posts and sift through the live updates, searching for relevant tweets about topics important to you. There are even programs like Tweetdeck and Hootsuite that allow you to follow hashtags and keep an eye on what people are saying around the world.
For those of us that have been taken by wanderlust, it is the perfect method for keeping in touch with other travelers. I have planned entire trips around hashtags and the information they have provided me. From finding out about new locations, to getting reviews of local hostels and hotels, to even avoiding certain airlines…there is a well of helpful data out there to check out.
Here are some of the most interesting travel-related Twitter hashtags that you should definitely be keeping an eye on.
This is an obvious one, but still shouldn’t be neglected. The majority of travel-related content will be sorted under this term, and you will be sure to find a lot you can use by checking it out. I notice that a lot of more official sources, like travel blogs and companies, use this one the most. While travelers themselves are more likely to go with a specific hashtag instead.
An excellent day of the week for travel news and deals, this is a conversation held by thousands of people all day Tuesday, every week. The official site for it is no longer up, but it is still used regularly.
Another fun day-specific hashtag, you can learn all you need to know about trips involving the beach. I love this one, because I often find out about special events going on in my local area, at beaches a short drive away. I have also found out about major parties and festivals held around the world, some that have become impromptu travel opportunities.
Are you currently on a trip around the world, or planning to be in the near future? Maybe it is just your dream to set out one day and spend the next year or more making your way from one country to the next. This hashtag has people just like you who have already done it, are currently doing it, or are planning on doing it soon.
This is a weekly chat held by the folks at Zip, Set, Go, a popular travel planning blog. Discuss your trip or where you are hoping to go, read about people’s experiences and share your passion with like-minded individuals who love setting out on adventures as much as you do. Held Thursdays from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM EST.
